Best Sprays for Protecting Hair Against Heat

In today’s post I’ll share my favourite heat protectants for hair. First I should let you know that they’re all truly universal and go well with any hair regardless of its porosity, texture or length. My hair got much better and prettier since I started using thermal protection. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. <3

How do I use heat protectants to shield the hair from thermal damage?

I always reach for one when planning on blow-drying, straightening or curling the hair. There are different types of products and I’m big on sprays. First, they’re extremely easy to use, sink in the hair quickly, and they’re lightweight. The application of such products takes literally a few seconds. I apply it from mid lengths and wait until it’s absorbed. After a few minutes I comb the hair out and get to heat styling.

The best heat protectant sprays for hair

I tested lots of products, but many of them were more like a traditional hair spray, failing to fully protect the hair. Luckily, I found a few gems and will round them up for you!

Nanoil Heat Protectant Spray

Nanoil has been my favourite hair care brand for a long time. My hair loves Nanoil’s products – they’re made from natural ingredients and are really effective. This spray does well too! It’s based on water and is free from oils, and I like it. The product is infused with hydrolyzed silk – awesome! Its tiny particles penetrate the hair to repair it from within, plus deliver wonderful shine and smoothness. Nanoil Heat Protectant Spray is non-sticky and sinks in very quickly. It manages to protect the hair from really high temperature (up to 430℉/220℃) so even extreme heat becomes less destructive. On top of that, it has a very subtle scent – I love it. The product has a shockingly low price given the benefits it brings. Nanoil is the best heat protectant spray I’ve used.

Davines Essential Haircare Melu Hair Shield

Davines is known for simplicity and this hair mist has the same feature. I really like it that they use recycled plastic. The manufacturer says it is a spray-on conditioner and it really works like one. To me, the protective properties are the most important and the product definitely has them. The spray prevents hair breakage. I noticed it made my hair smoother and less prone to damage. It comes in a 250-ml bottle, lasts long, but the price isn’t inviting. It was my favourite before I got Nanoil.

Kemon And 13 Heat Spray

With Kemon, we’re going back to affordable prices. The spray comes in a 200-ml bottle and is quite efficient. I like to reach for it. It has really cool ingredients – ferulic acid which is rich in antioxidants. Such ingredients are rare in hair products. Kemon And 13 Heat Spray is very light and sinks in quickly. However, you need to use it sparingly because it may weigh your hair down. After some time I figured out the right amount. It has a delicate smoothing and defrizzing effect. It’s not the best product but, given the price, it’s definitely worth trying.

Ouai Heat Protection Spray

Light texture and easy use are things I like the most about this spray. It also has a lovely scent and great ingredients. Ouai Heat Protection Spray has many oils and botanical extracts which are loved by nearly all hair types. It doesn’t leave the hair stiff or heavy but makes it smell of flowers. The spray protects from 230℃/446°F which is great! Beyond that it tames frizz, making the hair look flawless for many hours. This product has many benefits so you may be wondering why it’s so low in my ranking. Well, it has three big flaws: small size, big price and not lasting long. I don’t think I’ll buy it again.

L’oreal Paris Elseve Dream Long Spray

A spray from L’oreal comes last. I have a fondness for this brand because I bought my first beauty products ever from them. When I used this spray it seemed okay. Then I tried others and could compare it. Well, L’oreal Paris Elseve Dream Long Spray has some negatives, but I’ll start witht the benefits: the low price and big size are the biggest ones. It ensures high protection (from 230℃/446°F), plus has a strong smoothing and shine-heightening effect. Sadly, it often weighed my hair down, even left it sticky, so I had to wash it more often. The formula leaves a lot to be desired but it may be treated as a product for emergencies considering its price. It doesn’t have extra benefits like the above products but it does fulfil its role, protecting the hair from heat effectively.

That’s the end of the list featuring my top picks for heat protection. I recommend trying at least one – you’ll feel the difference while straightening or blow-drying your hair.

Let me know if you choose one and share the effects! <3
